Huey P. Newton was an African-American activist. He was best known for founding the Black Panther Party with Bobby Seale. Among other things, the Black Panther Party fought for freedom, employment, housing, education, free healthcare, and an end to police brutality.
Newton was arrested in 1967. He was later convicted of voluntary manslaughter and sentenced to 2 to 15 years in prison. It was then that "Free Huey" became a popular slogan of the day and that slogan helped Newton's cause. He was freed in 1970.
